Founded in 1947 by three MIT engineers—Harold Edgerton, Kenneth Germeshausen, and Herbert Grier—EG&G began as a technical consulting firm specializing in high-speed photography and electrical pulse timing. Their expertise was instrumental during the Manhattan Project, where they developed imaging systems to capture nuclear detonations. EG&G quickly evolved into a national defense contractor, supporting the Atomic Energy Commission and later the U.S. Department of Defense. With deep roots in scientific innovation and military research, EG&G became synonymous with precision engineering, classified technologies, and Cold War-era nuclear testing.
EG&G’s portfolio spanned optical sensing, radiographic imaging, explosives detection, and electronic warfare systems. They developed iconic tools like the Rapatronic camera for capturing nuclear fireballs and the Krytron switch used in nuclear weapon triggers. Their divisions included Optoelectronics, Life Sciences, and Technical Services, offering solutions for airport security, biochemical diagnostics, and aerospace instrumentation. EG&G also produced night vision equipment, acoustic sensors, and microwave components, serving both government agencies and industrial clients with cutting-edge technologies.
At its peak, EG&G employed over 35,000 people and operated across multiple continents, with headquarters in Massachusetts and major facilities in Nevada, Maryland, and California. The company played a pivotal role in nuclear weapons testing, stealth aircraft development, and environmental monitoring. EG&G’s legacy includes contributions to the Hydrogen Bomb program, aviation safety, and scientific instrumentation. In 1999, its commercial divisions merged with PerkinElmer, while its defense services were acquired by URS Corporation, later becoming part of AECOM.
Though EG&G ceased operations under its original name in 2010, its influence lives on through successor entities and technologies still in use today. The company’s pioneering work in timing systems, photographic diagnostics, and nuclear safety protocols laid the groundwork for modern defense engineering and scientific imaging. EG&G’s story is a testament to how academic brilliance, government collaboration, and technical mastery can shape global security and innovation. Whether in a lab, a battlefield, or a data center, EG&G’s legacy continues to echo through the tools and systems that protect and inform our world.
